The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is a federal public law passed by the 111th United States Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama. Based largely on broad proposals made by President Barack Obama, the Act is intended to provide a stimulus to the U.S. economy in the wake of the economic downturn brought about by the subprime mortgage crisis and the resulting credit crunch. The bill includes federal tax cuts, expansion of unemployment benefits and other social welfare provisions, and domestic spending in education, health care, and infrastructure, including the energy sector. President Obama signed the bill into law at an economic forum he was hosting in Denver, Colorado, on Tuesday, February 17, 2009.
What's in the Act for Pennsylvania?
Allocations to states constitute 69% of the total cost of the Act. According to the Center for American Progress, Pennsylvania is likely to receive 4.31% of its gross state product, or $22.9 billion, to create jobs with clean, efficient energy; modernize roads, bridges, transit, and waterways; structure education for the 21st century; help workers hurt by the economy; save public sector jobs and protect vital services; cut taxes to make work pay; and perform other taxes to stimulate consumption.
